Yes, you most certainly read that correctly. Never in my life did I ever think that eggs, bacon, and pancakes could be pulled off so perfectly. Never did I think that at the age of 26, I'd still be experiencing such life changing flavors for what some would say, the most basic dishes.
However, all this changed the second I walked through the door of “Kitchen” in Providence, Rhode Island. Chef Howard runs a one man show in his quaint and cozy red brick building that is his restaurant. “Kitchen”, which seats up to a staggering fourteen people, puts out the best breakfast food I have ever tasted. I’m not sure I've felt so much love put into a dish since my Grandmother was alive making food for my family, and for that experience, I thank Howard. The menu is small, like maybe twelve items, but it is executed to the highest degree. Options include: platters like you see above (The Big Shot), breakfast quesadillas, LEGENDARY griddled muffins, omelets, potatoes, hash, and French Toast. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. I’m not sure if it’s the butter that makes it taste so good, or maybe the stove itself having years of flavor burnt into it, or maybe it's magic dust Howard dumps into it, but regardless of what it is, the meal had my jaw dropped the entire time I was there. But before you can get to that experience, there are some things to note. First, you have to get into the door. Waits for this spot can and will be up to two or more hours if you are not there when it opens. Second, it’s cash only. So, come prepared. Third, they “talk about you when you leave.”. There is a sign above the door on the way out that states that exact message, and I have seen first-hand that it does truly happen. So to keep this short and simple, come early, come with cash, and don’t be an ass inside the place. I know it’s a bold claim, but take my word for it, and put it on your bucket list.
